DEXA Scan (Bone Densitometry) — gold-standard test for osteoporosis and bone-mineral density.
About this test
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) measures bone mineral density in the spine, hip and forearm. It is the international gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia, predicting fracture risk, and monitoring response to treatment. The scan takes 10–20 minutes, uses very low-dose X-rays (about 1/10 the dose of a chest X-ray), and is completely painless. Recommended for women over 50, men over 65, and anyone with risk factors (long-term steroids, family history, previous low-impact fracture, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease).
