PFT (Spirometry) with bronchodilator study
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT / Spirometry) — measures lung capacity and airflow to diagnose asthma, COPD and other lung disease.
About this test
PFT (Spirometry) measures how much air your lungs can hold and how fast you can move it in and out. It is the key diagnostic test for asthma, COPD, restrictive lung disease, and is used for pre-surgical fitness assessment and occupational health screening. The test takes 15–30 minutes and involves several forceful breathing maneuvers through a mouthpiece. Bronchodilator-response testing adds 30 minutes.
Important information & instructions
- 1) If patient is asthmatic, to bring their puff with them to tackle any emergency.
- 2) If there is history of cough with heamoptysis / active pulmonary tuberculosis (sputum positive) then PFT is contraindicated.
- 3) Patient should be able to follow instructions given by techies.
- 4) Recent admission because of heart disease.
