Widal
Widal test — agglutination test for typhoid fever; should be interpreted alongside symptoms.
About this test
The Widal test detects antibodies against Salmonella typhi (the cause of typhoid fever). A 4-fold rise in titre between two samples 7–14 days apart confirms typhoid. A single high titre is suggestive but not definitive — many patients have low background titres from previous vaccination or exposure. For best results, Widal should be done after 7 days of fever, and ideally combined with blood culture (the gold standard).
