What is a FibroScan?
FibroScan is a non-invasive ultrasound-based test that measures liver stiffness (a marker of fibrosis) and the Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP, a measure of fatty liver). It is painless, takes about 10 minutes, and replaces many liver biopsies in evaluating chronic liver disease.
When is a FibroScan recommended?
Chronic Hepatitis B or C · Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH) · alcohol-related liver disease · suspected cirrhosis · monitoring liver disease progression or response to treatment · before starting hepatotoxic medications · pre-bariatric surgery evaluation.
Preparation
Fast for 3 hours before the test. Wear loose clothing. The test is painless and you can resume normal activities immediately afterwards.
