What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast used to detect breast cancer early — often years before a lump is felt. It is the most effective screening test available and is recommended for all women over 40, and earlier for those at high risk.
Screening vs diagnostic mammography
Screening mammogram — for women with no symptoms, performed annually or biennially. Diagnostic mammogram — for women with a breast lump, pain, nipple discharge, or to follow up on a screening abnormality. We also offer breast ultrasound as a complementary study, especially for dense breasts.
What to expect
The scan takes 15–20 minutes. Each breast is gently compressed between two plates for a few seconds while images are captured from two angles. Compression may be briefly uncomfortable but is essential for clear images. Avoid using deodorant, powder, or perfume on the chest/underarm on the day of the scan.
