PFT in Delhi

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) / Spirometry at Classic Diagnostics — measures lung volume and airflow to diagnose asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions.

What is a PFT?

PFT (also called Spirometry or Lung Function Test) measures how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you can move air in and out. It is the key diagnostic test for asthma, COPD, restrictive lung disease, and is used to assess fitness before surgery or for occupational health screening.

When is a PFT recommended?

Chronic cough, breathlessness, or wheezing · suspected asthma or COPD · before major surgery · occupational health surveillance · monitoring of known lung disease · evaluation of smokers and ex-smokers · pre/post bronchodilator response assessment.

How the test is performed

You breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer through several breathing maneuvers — quiet breathing, then forceful inhalation and exhalation. The technician will coach you. The test takes 15–30 minutes. Bronchodilator response testing may add another 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions about PFT

Is a PFT painful?
No, but it can be tiring — you are asked to breathe forcefully several times. Most people find it easy.
How should I prepare for a PFT?
Avoid heavy meals for 2 hours, no smoking for 4 hours, no vigorous exercise for 30 minutes. Skip your inhaler for 6–8 hours if your doctor advises a bronchodilator-response test (otherwise continue medications as usual).
Can children have a PFT?
Yes — typically from age 6 onwards, since the test requires cooperation with breathing instructions.
